About 50 billion dollars are spent on tree planting around the world on annual basis, and we’re still at a net negative of what we need for tree planting. We need to be more efficient. Numerous plantation drive has been conducted and on going over the last few decades ever since the realisation of global warming and climate change and its negative impact on environment. Several governments, NGOs, CSOs, public and private institutions have been actively taking measures to replenish the forest. Myriad campaigns, projects, policies and schemes has been launched and implemented at various level of government and organisations. Its has been incorporated in the agenda and manifesto of multiple political parties. Despite of all the efforts, India's total forest cover area of the total geographical area hasn't witness much of a change. As per the Forest Survey of India (FSI), the forest cover area in India as of 2001 is 20.55% of the total geographical area and 21.05% and 21.71% in 2011 and 2021 respectively. It is time to pause and raise the question, “What must have been the reason for the stagnancy of forests area despite of all the measures and campaign”? A time when the act of planting tree is receiving reviews from across the spectrum- here is mine. Excluding all the natural phenomena and weather conditions which are beyond human control which sometimes are the causes of plantation failure, one major flaw is that post the plantation of tree saplings, nobody revisits the site to protect and take care of its growth. Other reason of failures includes improper site selection, wrong species selection, poor planting stock and wrong season. This leads to wastage of time, efforts and money, including the tree saplings. The biggest tree planting mistakes are monocultures, invasive tree species and poor water management… another big mistake would be not involving the stakeholders.” – Harrie Lovenstein, head of RD, Land Life Co. In order to implement effective plantation it is vital to involve the local people, select the right species, location and season. Equally as important is to keep a check on animals, insects, fungi and pest. Plantation alone is not enough it requires revisiting the site frequently and taking proper care which is crucial during the thriving stages. These facet seems to be trifle but emphasising on this few aspects would make a massive difference in conserving our “ Only One Earth”.
